The Vascular Center for Men: The Internet Incident

General Discussion

The instructor may want to refresh students’ memories with respect to ethical philosophies and approaches to ethical decision making before turning to this critical incident.  We recommend the following texts for a review of philosophies and approaches:

  •       Kenneth W. Clarkson, et al., West’s Business Law, 7E, West, 1998 (Ch. 2)

  •       Marianne Jennings, Business:  Its Legal, Ethical and Global Environment, 4E, South-Western, 1997 (Ch. 2)

  •       Gene R. Laczniak & Patrick E. Murphy, Ethical Marketing Decisions:  The Higher Road,  Allyn & Bacon, 1993 (Chs. 2 and 6)

  •       Joseph W. Weiss, Business Ethics, 2E, Dryden Press, 1998 (Chs. 1-3).

Other investigations are reported in the November 2, 1998, issue of USA Today, on pages 1A and 2A.  A federation of state medical boards apparently will address this issue at their annual meeting in the spring of 1999.  The article also reports on how the various federal agencies are dealing with this issue.  Newly mandated label changes by the FDA are discussed in an Associated Press article in the November 27, 1998, issue of the Lincoln (NE) Journal Star.
