Response #1 to the Mini-Dilemma

Seriously, I think e, try to advocate the use of the $5
rod by using all acceptable internal communication
channels available, is the best, first place to start.
It is Dan’s responsibility to follow accepted channels
of communication to ensure his opinion is heard and his
data taken into consideration.  Following the chain of
command also lends credence that he is truly trying to
ensure the corporation does the right thing.

Response #2 to the Mini-Dilemma

I believe the best answer is #e. The employee should
try to utilize his internal reporting mechanisms to resolve
his dilemma. If those fail, his next dilemma is whether to
go to outside agencies to try to resolve is case.

Response #3 to the Mini-Dilemma

Dan Smith should: E) try to advocate the use of the $5 rod
by using all acceptable internal communication channels available.

Dan should attempt to resolve the issue within the company first
by raising his concern to the appropriate individuals in leadership
and providing them with whatever evidence he has to support his
position. Dan could also argue that a decision to install the
inexpensive rods could provide the company with a competitive advantage
if they were first in the marketplace to install the rods. Certainly by
installing the rods the company could launch a marketing campaign
highlighting the safety feature and the company’s concern for the safety
of its customers. While there is no legal requirement to install these
devices the company would exhibit a high degree of social responsiveness
by installing them.

If the company chose not to install the rods, Dan would be faced with
the dilemma of going public with the information and risking his
employment with the company.

Response #4 to the Mini-Dilemma

Dan may see the greatest chance for change if he adopts
an action that includes thoughts related to c) and e)

I agree that people should, in most cases, follow the
appropriate communication channels to create positive
change. (e) However, since this $5 rod will undoubtedly
save lives and could have a serious impact on the
company, I think that his communication in this case
should express his active and urgent concern.(c)

I disagree with e's intent of sharing his concern will
fellow employees; he should concentrate his efforts with
managers who can impact the change.

Response #1 to the Mini-Dilemma

I think that Dan should choose options e, try to
advocate the use of the $5 rod by using all acceptable
internal communication channels available and c, voice
internal active concern to both managers and co-workers
who will listen to his opinion.

Both alternatives are complementary. First, he should
follow the compliance procedures established in the
organization in order to set a formal, written claim
that comprises the detail of his concerns and, to be
listened to the right people. Likewise, he should
encourage his managers and co-workers to start thinking
in this big issue, to make of this a corporate business
rather than a person’s worry.
